US Tariffs Target Mexican Home Appliances: Economic Implications

The United States is set to impose additional tariffs on a wide range of Mexican-manufactured home appliances starting June 23, according to a recent U.S. Commerce Department notice. This latest move extends Donald Trump’s steel tariffs to include eight product categories, including:

  • Refrigerator-freezers
  • Washing machines
  • Dryers
  • Dishwashers
  • Freezers
  • Stoves
  • Food waste disposals
  • Welded wire racks

The new tariffs will specifically target the steel content in each of these products, adding to the existing 50% tariffs already imposed on Mexican steel imports. This marks the second expansion of “steel derivative products” subject to tariffs under the Trump administration.

Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard is currently negotiating with U.S. officials to potentially reduce or eliminate these steel tariffs up to certain import volumes. Industry sources suggest that a quota arrangement may emerge, allowing a specified volume of Mexican imports to enter duty-free or at reduced rates, with full tariffs applying to amounts exceeding those quotas.

The expanded tariffs could significantly impact major manufacturers with production facilities in Mexico. South Korean companies Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which produce a substantial portion of their U.S.-sold appliances in Mexico, are reportedly considering relocating some production to their U.S. plants in response to the tariff situation.

The Mexican government has not yet issued an official response to the Commerce Department’s announcement, which comes at a time of ongoing trade tensions between the neighboring countries.
