A high-ranking US official has canceled the visa of a Mexican political figure following a confrontational social media post that contained profane language directed at US immigration authorities.
US Response to Social Media Post
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced Thursday that he “personally gave the order” to cancel the visa of Melissa Cornejo, a member of the state council of the ruling Morena party in Jalisco. This decision came after she published a controversial post on the social media platform X.
Cornejo had shared an image of a protester holding a Mexican flag in front of a burnt vehicle in Los Angeles, where demonstrations against immigration raids were taking place. The vehicle displayed a profane message against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In her post, Cornejo wrote a vulgar Spanish-language message suggesting US officials could “stick my visa up your ass.”
Landau’s Response
Landau responded directly to Cornejo through his official government social media account, stating that he had canceled her visa following the “vulgar post.” He further claimed that US authorities informed him Cornejo “doesn’t even have a valid visa to cancel” and added that those who “glorify violence and the defiance of legitimate authorities” are not welcome in the United States.
Context of the Incident
The exchange occurred just one day after Landau met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City, where immigration and security issues were reportedly discussed.
Public Reaction
The incident has generated mixed reactions on social media, with some supporting Landau’s response while others criticized it as an extreme reaction to an expression of opinion.
