A significant road renovation project has begun in Tulum, addressing long-standing infrastructure needs in one of Mexico’s most popular Caribbean destinations.

The project, which started on May 19, focuses on upgrading Cobá Sur Avenue (also known as Avenida Okoót), a vital access road connecting tourists to hotels, archaeological sites, and Tulum’s renowned beaches.

The first phase will improve 4,200 square meters of roadway with an investment of 8.4 million pesos (approximately US $435,000). The comprehensive 3-kilometer renovation includes storm drainage installation, new signage, asphalt resurfacing, and enhanced pedestrian and bicycle lanes.

According to local officials, the renovation will directly benefit 47,000 people and is being implemented in stages to minimize traffic disruption. The improvements address demands from residents and business owners who have lobbied for repairs to the deteriorating thoroughfare for years.

The upgrade comes as Tulum continues to solidify its position as a premier tourism destination on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The town, home to one of the best-preserved coastal Maya archaeological sites, has seen steady growth in tourism due to its proximity to Cancún and its stunning beaches.

Construction is expected to continue throughout the coming weeks, with officials asking residents and visitors for patience during the renovation process.
