Tropical Storm Alvin, identified as the Northern Hemisphere’s first named storm of 2025, developed approximately 600 kilometers off the coast of Mexico’s Michoacán. This storm poses potential travel disruptions to western Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.

According to Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN), Alvin is progressing northwest at 17 km/h, with maximum sustained winds reaching 65 km/h. The U.S. National Hurricane Center warns that the storm will likely bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to Mexico’s west-central coastline over the weekend.

Forecasts and Impact

Currently classified as a tropical storm, Alvin is expected to weaken to a tropical depression before reaching Baja California Sur by Sunday. The storm is projected to move near popular tourist destinations, including Cabo San Lucas, by June 1.

Mexican authorities have issued rainfall alerts for 12 states, notably Mexico City, Michoacán, Guerrero, Puebla, Jalisco, Colima, and Guanajuato. In addition, very heavy rain is anticipated in Querétaro, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, México State, and Morelos, which may lead to flooding, landslides, and rising water levels in rivers and streams.

SMN’s Expected Trajectory

  • May 29, 6 p.m.: 580 km southwest of Punta San Telmo, Michoacán (tropical storm).
  • May 31, 6 p.m.: 270 km south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas (remnant low).
  • June 1, 6 a.m.: 170 km southeast of Cabo San Lucas (remnant low).

The storm emerges during what meteorologists anticipate to be a below-average eastern Pacific hurricane season, in contrast to the expected above-average Atlantic hurricane season. Travelers heading to western Mexico and Baja California Sur should continue to monitor weather updates through the weekend.

In a separate development, the SMN is watching a tropical depression near Veracruz, which may become the Atlantic’s first named storm of the season, potentially resulting in additional rainfall along Mexico’s Gulf Coast.
