The iconic Pyramid of the Moon at the ancient Teotihuacán archaeological complex near Mexico City has reopened to climbers after a five-year hiatus. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has initiated this reopening to boost tourism in the Teotihuacán Valley.
Reopening Details
The pyramid was closed in March 2020, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and remained off-limits during INAH’s extensive conservation work on the structure. The reopening started on Monday, May 19, 2025, marking the end of these preservation efforts.
Visitors should be aware that access is limited to the first section of the pyramid, which includes five platforms and 47 steps. The upper levels remain restricted to protect the ancient monument’s physical integrity.

Teotihuacán is located about 50 kilometers northeast of Mexico City. Visitors can enter the archaeological complex for a fee of 100 Mexican pesos. There are discounts available for certain groups:
