Silvia Delgado García, formerly a lawyer for Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, is now stepping into a new role as a judge in Ahumada, Chihuahua. Garnering over 23,000 votes, Delgado secured the second position in the judicial elections held on June 1. Her election has stirred controversy due to her past association with Guzmán, leading critics to question her suitability for the judgeship.

Despite the controversies, Delgado is set to serve as a criminal court judge in this border state for up to nine years. The civil association Defensorxs argues that Delgado fails to meet the constitutional requirement for maintaining a “good reputation.” They have urged unsuccessful candidates to take legal action to challenge her election. However, the National Electoral Institute (INE) has not disqualified Delgado’s candidacy, as such decisions fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Electoral Tribunal.

This event has garnered significant attention in Mexico, emphasizing the importance of the judiciary’s integrity and independence, especially as the country continues its fight against organized crime.
