President Claudia Sheinbaum has proposed a “general agreement” with U.S. President Donald Trump to address key issues such as security, migration, and trade between Mexico and the United States. This proposal emerged during a 20-minute phone call that served as a substitute for their canceled bilateral meeting at the G7 Summit in Canada.

Sheinbaum mentioned that Trump had apologized for missing their planned meeting, which he had to abandon early due to ongoing situations in the Middle East. During the call, Trump acknowledged the contributions made by Mexican families living in the U.S.

The proposed agreement is intended to be independent of the USMCA trade deal, which is due for review. Concurrently, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard plans to meet with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington to tackle unresolved trade matters, including tariffs affecting Mexican steel, aluminum, and automobiles.

In a press conference following her return from the G7 Summit, Sheinbaum emphasized the positive reception that Mexico received from world leaders, noting that “Everyone spoke very well of Mexico.” She added that the country received international acknowledgments for its economic importance.

Sheinbaum also defended her choice to travel using commercial airlines for international trips, stating it allows her to stay connected with citizens, as opposed to becoming isolated by using military flights. The presidential plane was sold to Tajikistan in 2023 during the previous administration.

At the summit, Sheinbaum briefly spoke with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who expressed concerns about global situations and underlined the significance of building peace.
