Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has criticized what she calls deliberate attempts to falsely portray Mexicans in the United States as violent. This follows recent protests in Los Angeles against immigration raids.

During her press conference, Sheinbaum addressed circulating images on social media that show a person with a Mexican flag atop a burning police car during the protests. She described these images as “provocations” aimed at creating a negative perception of Mexico and its citizens in the US.

“This image they want to promote of Mexicans in the United States being violent is false. It’s a set-up,” Sheinbaum stated. She highlighted that Mexicans in the US are predominantly hardworking men and women of good faith who do not seek violence.

The president referenced studies showing that undocumented immigrants commit fewer illegal acts compared to US citizens. She stressed the contributions of Mexican immigrants to the US economy, especially in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries.

Sheinbaum responded positively to US President Donald Trump’s social media post suggesting the potential for policy changes that recognize the importance of immigrant workers, particularly in farming and hospitality. However, she expressed hope that Trump will follow through on these sentiments.

Regarding the upcoming Mexico vs. Dominican Republic soccer match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Sheinbaum expressed confidence that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would not target Mexican soccer fans attending the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup opening match.

The president has consistently promoted peaceful protests while defending the rights of Mexicans abroad, especially amid heightened immigration enforcement in the United States.
