President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for peaceful protest and emphasized the need for due process after ICE conducted operations in Los Angeles resulting in the detention of 42 Mexican nationals. Defending Mexican immigrants in the U.S., Sheinbaum described them as “hardworking” and “honest,” highlighting their significant contributions to both the American and Mexican economies. She stressed that most Mexicans in the U.S. have either work permits or citizenship, and those without documentation have usually resided there for over five years.
Politically, tensions have escalated, with California Governor Gavin Newsom accusing President Donald Trump of exacerbating the situation by deploying National Guard troops without prior consultation. On the other hand, Trump administration officials view the protests, which prominently feature Mexican flags, as threatening.
