Fernando Reyes, a former Microsoft game designer, has returned to Mexico after nearly a decade of what many would consider a successful career in the United States. Known for his work on the popular Halo franchise, Reyes discovered that his “American Dream” was actually rooted in his homeland.

Raised in a working-class family in Mexico City, Reyes climbed the ranks in the U.S. tech industry, starting as an engineer in Microsoft’s Xbox division. Achieving his goal of joining the Halo development team marked a significant career milestone.

Despite these professional achievements in Seattle, Reyes began feeling a sense of disconnection from his cultural roots. Initially, he purchased a property in Playa del Carmen for winter escapes, but soon realized a deeper connection to Mexico was necessary.

“I was tired of always speaking English, tired of the food I missed, the cold Seattle winters, and especially the isolation,” Reyes explained his reasons for returning.

His story highlights a growing trend of Mexican professionals returning to Mexico after careers abroad, bringing new skills and insights. For Reyes, it wasn’t about abandoning his American experiences but rather integrating them with his Mexican identity.

The return was not without its challenges. Reyes observed that living abroad had changed his perspectives on cultural differences, especially regarding punctuality and social norms.

Reyes’ experience reflects that of many returning nationals—a renewed appreciation for their homeland, viewed through a lens shaped by international experience. This suggests that for some, the pursuit of opportunity can lead them full circle, back to Mexico.
