Record-Breaking Rainfall in Mexico City: June’s Unprecedented Downpour

Mexico City is currently experiencing its rainiest June in over 21 years, with an unprecedented volume of rainfall soaking the capital. According to the Ministry of Water and Sustainable Management (Segiagua), more than 220 million cubic meters of water have fallen on the city in just 25 days.

This record-breaking precipitation could climb even higher before the month concludes, surpassing all rainfall totals recorded in the capital since 2004. Remarkably, these exceptional downpours occur even though three months of the rainy season remain.

The heavy rainfall results from a combination of meteorological factors, including the El Niño weather phenomenon, which has increased both the number and intensity of tropical cyclones in the Pacific and Atlantic. This has significantly raised the probability of rainfall above historical averages.

Despite the deluge, officials report no serious damage in Mexico City, crediting the proper functioning of the deep drainage system. However, they note that trash obstructing hydraulic infrastructure continues to be a problem throughout the capital.

Impact Beyond Mexico City

The impact of June’s rainfall extends beyond Mexico City. Almost every state has experienced near-constant precipitation this month, with Jalisco exceeding normal statistical averages in all regions. Other significantly affected states include:

  • Veracruz
  • Oaxaca
  • Chiapas
  • Nayarit
  • Michoacán
  • Guerrero
  • Guanajuato
  • Puebla
  • Tabasco
  • Campeche
  • Yucatán
  • Quintana Roo

Authorities have issued alerts for flooding, landslides, and rising rivers, recommending that residents take precautions and stay informed about continued rain forecasts in the coming weeks.

For comparison, June 2024 was recorded as the rainiest month nationwide since 1941, with 49% more rainfall than typical for that time of year. According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), a normal June rainfall total for Mexico City would be 154.4 mm.
