Puerto Vallarta is set to launch its first major ecological restoration project in 2026, focusing on the revitalization of El Coapinole lagoon in the northern part of the city. The initiative, backed by Mayor Luis Munguía’s administration, aims to transform the neglected natural area through ecohydrological restoration techniques.

The comprehensive project will restore the lagoon’s ecosystem by:

  • Recovering surface runoff
  • Removing sediment buildup
  • Managing native and invasive species

The restored area will become part of the planned Coapinole Linear Park, creating a green corridor connecting the lagoon to the La Bobadilla Sports Complex and providing recreational space for residents in less developed areas.

Dengue Fever Campaign

Health officials in Puerto Vallarta are conducting an aggressive campaign against dengue fever as the rainy season approaches. Ministry vehicles are patrolling neighborhoods with mosquito-killing treatments, which authorities assure are safe for humans and pets. This effort appears to be working, with only two new dengue cases reported in the past week compared to 118 in the first quarter of 2025.

Tourism Developments

Riviera Nayarit continues to expand its hospitality offerings with two significant announcements:

  1. The former Wyndham Altar Nuevo Vallarta has been rebranded as the Fiesta Americana Nuevo Vallarta Resort & Spa, featuring 229 suites and new dining concepts.
  2. The adults-only Unico 20°105° Hotel Vallarta is scheduled to open on September 1, offering 141 guest rooms and multiple restaurants.

Security Alert

On the security front, the U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara has issued an alert following confirmed reports of U.S. citizens being kidnapped after using dating apps in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit. Some victims were reportedly extorted for large sums of money. Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus clarified that a recent incident involved tourists who allegedly crossed into Nuevo Nayarit to meet sex workers and were subsequently coerced into calling relatives for ransom.
