President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed several important national and international issues during her Monday morning press conference, with particular focus on Mexico’s energy independence and the country’s stance on global sovereignty.
The President confirmed that Mexico is making significant progress toward “energy sovereignty” amid growing tensions in the Middle East that could potentially disrupt global oil supplies. She highlighted that most oil produced in Mexico is now refined domestically, pointing to the operational status of the Dos Bocas refinery in Tabasco as evidence of this progress.
Sheinbaum noted that Mexico’s fuel imports have decreased significantly due to strategic investments, including:
- The purchase of the Deer Park refinery in Texas
- The construction of the Dos Bocas (Olmeca) refinery
- Upgrades to Pemex’s six other refineries
However, she acknowledged that natural gas remains an area requiring further development, as Mexico still imports a large portion from Texas.
Foreign Policy Stance
Sheinbaum reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to the principle that “every people has the right to decide their form of government,” emphasizing this as a cornerstone of Mexican foreign policy. She made these comments when asked about recent developments regarding Iran and potential regime change.
The President also commented on recent polling that shows her party, Morena, leading in 15 of 17 states that will hold elections in 2027, describing the “transformation movement” as “very strong in the country.”
Sheinbaum will celebrate her 63rd birthday on Tuesday, which coincides with the feast day of Saint John the Baptist.
