Oaxaca’s Guelaguetza Festival 2025 kicks off with an extraordinary blend of cultural and historical events, starting notably with “Monday on the Hill.” Celebrating its 92nd edition, the festival continues to shine a spotlight on the region’s deep-rooted traditions through lively dance, music, and folklore.
The origins of the Guelaguetza Festival began with a Zapotec ritual and progressively adapted through Spanish influence, transforming it into a celebration aligned with Catholic practices. Today, it’s celebrated with events like “Donají, the Legend,” which brings the historical narratives of the Mixtec and Zapotec communities to the stage. The festival’s centerpiece, Lunes del Cerro, features performances by artists from Oaxaca’s varied regions, each displaying their distinct cultural flair.
Throughout the festival, approximately 139,000 tourists are anticipated to visit. They’re drawn by an array of activities that uplift the local atmosphere, including:
