The Playas MX app is now available to help beachgoers in Mexico keep an eye on water quality. Released by Semarnat and Cofepris, this handy tool offers real-time updates on seawater quality at 289 beaches spread across 17 Mexican coastal states. The app, free to download, taps into data from 393 sampling points, ensuring that beach visits remain enjoyable and safe.
Around 94% of tested beaches meet WHO standards. However, 16 beaches have been flagged for bacterial contamination, mainly located in Guerrero, Michoacán, and Jalisco. Playas MX is accessible through Google Play and the App Store, and users can also report issues or send feedback via the app. This effort supports Mexico’s National Campaign for the Cleanup and Conservation of Beaches and Coasts, focusing on reducing coastal pollution and safeguarding ecosystems.
