Mexico is preparing for a historic occasion as it gets ready to host the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This event, to be held at Estadio Azteca on June 11, 2026, marks the third time Mexico City will host a World Cup opening ceremony.
President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized the significance of the event at a recent press conference, calling it a “very special moment for Mexico.” It provides Mexicans the opportunity to showcase that they are the “best fans in the world.” The World Cup will be co-hosted with the United States and Canada, featuring Mexican matches in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.
Although the president has not confirmed her attendance at the opening ceremony, she mentioned the government’s plan to spread World Cup-related activities to all 32 Mexican states. The opening match is anticipated to attract a worldwide audience of around 550 million viewers, similar to the 2022 World Cup opener in Qatar.

Simultaneously, the Mexican government’s electric vehicle project, called “Olinia,” is progressing well according to President Sheinbaum. Initially announced to debut at the World Cup opening, it’s yet uncertain if this timeline will be feasible, but initial prototypes are expected to enter production next year. Mass production will occur through a partnership between the government and a private company.
“Olinia,” meaning “to move” in Nahuatl, aims to be an affordable electric vehicle for Mexican families and young people, with pricing competitive to other brands in the market.
