Mexico is advancing with its plans to construct five new airports across the country, aiming to enhance tourism, economic development, and improve air connectivity in key regions.
New Airport Locations
The planned airports will be situated in:
- San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato – The state government has formally requested an airport to boost tourism in the city, heralded as the “Best City in the World” by Travel and Leisure magazine.
- Ensenada, Baja California – This project is supported by both state and municipal governments, alongside business leaders.
- Costalegre, Jalisco – The nearly completed Chalacatepec International Airport is expected to commence operations by year-end, serving this burgeoning tourism area.
- Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco – This airport is focused on logistics and industrial activities due to its strategic position near major trade corridors.
- Quintana Roo – A new international airport is being planned, with potential sites on mainland Isla Mujeres or elsewhere in the northern part of the state.
According to Carlos Manuel Merino Campos from Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA), at least seven requests for new airport construction or expansion have been received. Developing these airports involves comprehensive planning, including feasibility studies, environmental impact assessments, and securing relevant land sizes ranging from 500 to 1,000 hectares to accommodate airport expansion.
Additional Airport Management Plans
Concurrently, the Navy Ministry (SEMAR) aims to expand its airport management beyond Mexico City International Airport to cover six more commercial airports: Lázaro Cárdenas, Tuxpan, Islas Marías, San Felipe, Guaymas, and Puerto Libertad.
These infrastructure undertakings signify considerable investments in Mexico’s transportation network and are poised to stimulate regional economic growth across various states.
