Mexico’s national soccer team secured a 2-1 victory over the United States in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup final, extending their record as the tournament’s most successful nation with 10 championships.

The match, held at a sold-out NRG Stadium in Houston before 72,000 predominantly Mexican supporters, saw El Tri come from behind after the US took an early lead in the fourth minute through Richards’ header.

Raúl Jiménez equalized in the 27th minute before team captain Edson Álvarez sealed the victory with a decisive header in the 77th minute. Jiménez finished the tournament as Mexico’s joint-top scorer with three goals, alongside César Montes.

The victory marks Mexico’s first Gold Cup triumph over the United States since 2019 and extends their overall head-to-head advantage to 39 wins against their northern rivals.

For head coach Javier Aguirre, who began his third stint leading the national team in August 2024, this championship represents an important stepping stone toward the 2026 World Cup. Aguirre noted that while the team has made significant progress, there are still improvements to be made before the World Cup, which he described as “the litmus test.”

The tournament proceeded without incident despite initial concerns about immigration raids potentially affecting attendance at Mexico’s opening match against the Dominican Republic in Los Angeles.

Mexico will now focus on preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which they will co-host with the United States and Canada.
