The Mexican government is actively supporting at least 30 Mexican citizens affected by the devastating floods in Texas, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry (SRE) reported that nine citizens have requested assistance to return to Mexico, 16 need replacement passports due to damage from the floods, and four others are already receiving help from their employers through work visa arrangements.
Impact of the Floods
The floods, which struck central Texas during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, have claimed at least 100 lives with many people still missing. Kerr County has been particularly hard hit, reporting 84 deaths, including 27 children and staff who were attending Camp Mystic along the Guadalupe River.
Heroic Actions by Mexican Counselors
President Sheinbaum specifically recognized two Mexican counselors at Camp Mystic, Silvana Garza Valdez and María Paula Zárate, who played crucial roles in rescuing campers. The young women moved their assigned campers to higher ground as the storm intensified on July 3, staying vigilant throughout the night until they could safely evacuate 20 young girls.
The Mexican Consulate in San Antonio is maintaining communication with affected Mexican families and plans to visit emergency shelters as soon as possible. Mexico has also deployed firefighters and rescue personnel from Acuña to assist with search efforts, a gesture that U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson publicly acknowledged.
Preparedness and Response
Many rural areas in Texas were reportedly unprepared for the scale of the disaster, with some local officials citing late or insufficient flood warnings from the National Weather Service. Search and rescue operations continue throughout the affected regions.
