Mexico’s avocado industry is branching into Brazil, reaching over 200 million consumers. The Brazilian government’s new protocol now permits the import of Mexican avocados, a pivotal shift for Mexico’s avocado sector. This strategy supports Mexico’s broader effort to diversify trade partners amidst challenging relations with the United States, its main avocado export market.
As the top avocado producer globally, Mexico commands about 34% of the international avocado market. Most of its production comes from Michoacán, with Jalisco, México state, Nayarit, Morelos, and Guerrero also contributing significantly. Even though Brazil’s own avocado production is on the rise, local demand consistently exceeds supply, creating a need for imports.
The initiative by the Mexican government aims to bolster trade ties with Brazil and other South American nations. In 2023, Mexico and Brazil recorded bilateral trade exceeding $16 billion, with negotiations ongoing to update an agreement from the early 2000s. This progress underscores the potential for enhanced economic connections and showcases Mexico’s strong position in the global avocado industry.
