Mexico City recently witnessed another significant protest against gentrification with approximately 200 demonstrators rallying for the third time in a month. The march commenced at the Benito Juárez Hemicycle in Alameda Central Park, drawing attention to the increasing housing costs and social displacement affecting the capital.

Among the participants were many university students who marched through the city’s historic center, making their way to the Zócalo and concluding near the Juárez metro station. Although the protest was mainly peaceful, authorities seized several potentially harmful items, including a Molotov cocktail.

Protestors carried signs with slogans such as “Decent housing for Mexicans” and “Get out Airbnb,” expressing concerns about foreign involvement in the local real estate market. The protest, which builds on previous ones from July 4 and July 20, continues to draw attention to gentrification issues fueled by foreign nationals, particularly U.S. citizens residing in Roma and Condesa.

In response, Mexico City’s government, led by Mayor Clara Brugada, has announced plans to develop affordable housing. Nevertheless, dissatisfaction remains high, with accusations against the government of contributing to the issue.

The movement is gaining momentum, illustrated by efforts such as the Youth Front for Housing organizing a “Regional Conference against Gentrification and Dispossession” at the National Autonomous University (UNAM) on August 9. These ongoing efforts underscore the city’s escalating tensions around housing rights and social displacement.
