Mexico City International Airport (AICM) has embarked on a significant $416 million (8 billion pesos) renovation project intended to modernize the airport’s facilities ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This extensive upgrade seeks to enhance the passenger experience at Mexico’s busiest airport.

The renovation is being managed by the Navy Ministry (SEMAR) and will be carried out in two phases. The first phase commenced on May 17 and is targeted for completion by May 2026, aligning with the World Cup scheduled for June and July. The second phase will take place post-tournament, from August through December 2026.

Renovation Details

The renovation will involve:

  • Substantial upgrades to walls, ceilings, floors, and roof waterproofing.
  • Restoration of Terminal 2’s travel clinic with polished floors and facade repairs.
  • Enhancements to conveyor systems, escalators, and elevators throughout the airport.

As part of the renovations, currently, some sections of both terminals are under construction. In Terminal 1, concourses 29 to 36 are closed, affecting access to the corridor from the Duty Free area. Terminal 2’s renovations focus on corridors leading to boarding areas.

Travel Advisory

To mitigate disruption, airport authorities have employed a phased approach. However, travelers should anticipate potential delays and are advised to arrive early during the renovation period.

Broader Initiative

This project is part of a larger initiative that includes similar renovations at Toluca International Airport and Cuernavaca International Airport, which will also serve as official entry points for teams and fans during the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Funding

Airport officials have confirmed that the entire renovation will be financed through airport revenue, without any federal funding.
