Mexico is undertaking substantial infrastructure developments in Baja California Sur, prominently featuring the construction of a new hospital in Los Cabos, along with crucial water management projects. These initiatives aim to address some of the state’s pressing needs.
Healthcare Expansion: Los Cabos Regional Hospital
Currently, construction is underway for the Los Cabos Regional Hospital, which will include 260 beds and will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, such as CT and MRI scanners. This facility will provide 46 medical specialties and is projected to cater to up to half a million residents when it opens in early 2027.
Addressing Water Issues
During a May visit, President Claudia Sheinbaum focused on tackling water scarcity in the region, emphasizing efforts like speeding up work on the second desalination plant in Cabo San Lucas and announcing the El Novillo dam project for La Paz, which is scheduled to commence construction in August.
Addressing Inequality and Enhancing Access
The president also expressed concerns about increasing inequality in Los Cabos caused by luxury tourism, which has impacted housing and beach access for local workers. Initiatives from State Governor Victor Manuel Castro are underway to reclaim public beach access, especially along the East Cape Road.
Additional Infrastructure Projects
- A housing development under the National Housing Commission’s Vivienda para el Bienestar program is reportedly 40% complete.
- Two new university campuses are being planned for Los Cabos.
- A 450-million-peso roundabout upgrade in San José del Cabo aims to alleviate traffic in a heavily congested area, with the construction expected to span 18 months.
The traffic improvement project has resulted in significant delays, but authorities are implementing measures to mitigate congestion during the construction period.
