Armed criminals have hijacked a truck carrying 33 metric tons of gold and silver concentrate valued at approximately 6 million pesos (US $320,000) on a highway south of Guadalajara. An investigation has been ordered by President Claudia Sheinbaum following this incident.
The heist occurred last week when assailants in two white vehicles with tinted windows intercepted a tractor trailer operated by Fletes Durango. The truck was transporting the valuable cargo to the port of Manzanillo. The attackers overpowered the security guards and driver, holding them captive for over an hour before escaping with the truck and its contents.
After being released unharmed, the victims reported the robbery to the National Guard at a nearby toll booth. Authorities later found the truck cab approximately 28 kilometers southwest of Guadalajara in Acatlán de Juárez; however, the trailer containing the precious metals remains missing.
The stolen cargo belongs to Grupo Minero Bacis of Durango state, one of Mexico’s largest producers of gold, silver, zinc, and lead. The company bypassed state prosecutors and filed a criminal complaint directly with the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) four days after the incident.
Concerning Trends in Highway Robberies
This highway robbery is part of a concerning trend across Mexico. Robbery attempts have increased by more than one-third in the first two months of 2025 compared to last year, with one robbery attempt occurring approximately every 50 minutes.
The surge in highway robberies presents a significant threat to Mexico’s economic security and may deter foreign investors who are otherwise attracted by nearshoring opportunities. Industry reports indicate these crimes have cost companies billions of dollars in lost merchandise over the past decade.
