Nayarit’s Pacific coast is becoming more accessible as the first direct flights to the United States are about to launch this July.

Beginning on July 16, low-cost carrier Volaris will operate flights between Tepic International Airport (TPQ) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Flight Schedule

  • The LAX flights will depart at 11:37 a.m. and arrive in Tepic at 2:27 p.m.
  • Return flights will leave Tepic at 6:50 p.m. and land in Los Angeles at 9:48 p.m.

Tepic’s airport received its international designation in 2009 but has only operated domestic routes until now. The new international service comes after significant renovations to handle increased passenger traffic, including a 2.5 billion-peso (US$145 million) modernization project with an expanded runway, new control tower, and a terminal capable of managing up to 20 million passengers annually.

Tourism and Expatriate Community

This route is anticipated to boost tourism in the Riviera Nayarit, home to luxury spots like Punta Mita and Nuevo Vallarta, and support the substantial Nayarit expatriate community in California.

The Mexican Airports Group (AME) notes that Tepic airport could attract 10-15% of passenger traffic currently going to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara airports, potentially serving more than three million passengers annually.

El Financiero reports potential future routes may eventually link Tepic with Canada, additional U.S. destinations, Central and South America, and Europe. Meanwhile, major highway renovations are in progress to improve access from the airport to Nayarit’s coastal destinations.
