A landmark establishment on Mexico’s Riviera Maya has disappeared from the landscape as demolition crews have razed the original Señor Frog’s location in Playa del Carmen after more than two decades of operation.
The iconic restaurant and bar, located near the Cozumel ferry terminal, was demolished last week due to structural safety concerns. According to city officials, the building had deteriorated to the point where collapse was a real possibility.
Immediate Interventions Due to Risks
“There was a risk. That’s why the decision was made to intervene immediately,” explained Hernán González, head of the city’s sustainable planning bureau.
The establishment, which had already ceased operations in October 2024, was part of a building complex that also contained offices and apartments on its upper floors. Local reports suggest that declining visitor numbers and reduced income contributed to the closure months before the demolition.
Continuing the Señor Frog’s Experience
Despite the closure of this location, tourists and visitors to Playa del Carmen can still experience the chain’s festive atmosphere at two other Señor Frog’s locations within 1.5 kilometers of the demolished site, both situated on the popular Fifth Avenue shopping strip. Two additional locations also operate across the water in Cozumel.
Señor Frog’s International Presence
Founded in Mazatlán, Sinaloa in 1971, Señor Frog’s has grown into an international chain with more than 17 locations worldwide. The brand is owned by Grupo Anderson’s, based in Cancún, which claims to be Mexico’s largest restaurant operator with over 50 establishments across various brands.
The closure in Playa del Carmen follows other high-profile shutdowns, including:
- The Las Vegas location at the end of 2024
- The original Mazatlán restaurant in 2018
