Iberia Expands with New Direct Flight from Madrid to Monterrey

Spanish airline Iberia is launching a new direct flight between Madrid and Monterrey as part of its ambitious “2030 Flight Plan,” which includes a €6 billion investment in international expansion.

The new route will make Monterrey Iberia’s second nonstop Mexican destination after Mexico City, creating additional connectivity between Spain and northern Mexico. Currently, Aeroméxico is the only airline operating direct flights between these two cities.

This expansion represents a strategic move to strengthen Madrid’s Barajas Airport as a competitive intercontinental hub. Besides Monterrey, Iberia is also adding new direct routes to:

  • Toronto
  • Philadelphia
  • Recife
  • Fortaleza
  • Orlando, among other destinations.

For Monterrey International Airport, this addition comes at a time of significant growth. In 2024, the airport exceeded one million international passengers for the first time, reaching 1.17 million travelers—an 18.8% increase compared to the previous year. The airport serves as Mexico’s primary northern air hub and is currently connected to Europe via Paris through both Aeroméxico and Air France.

Iberia is also reviving its service to destinations that are not capital cities of large Latin American countries, with plans to resume direct flights between Madrid and Cali, Colombia, with three weekly flights starting in December.

The Madrid-Mexico corridor continues to develop, with various airlines already offering direct connections between Madrid and Cancún, including:

  • Air Europa
  • World2Fly
  • Iberojet
