Los Cabos has emerged as one of Mexico’s premier international tourist destinations under the guidance of Rodrigo Esponda Cascajares, the Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board since October 2016.
During Esponda’s nearly nine-year leadership, the number of tourists doubled from two million to four million annually. This growth is attributed to a strategic management approach that blends public and private sector resources through the Los Cabos Tourism Board (FITURCA) and the Private Trust Fund for the Promotion of Los Cabos (FIPROTUR).
The funding model in Los Cabos is unique within Latin America. FITURCA receives 4% of the hotel tax, while FIPROTUR gathers voluntary contributions from nearly 100 companies across various sectors. This innovative structure allows Los Cabos to fund essential initiatives such as maintaining an office in Los Angeles to attract California travelers and securing visits from the esteemed Michelin Guide.
Esponda’s team has emphasized market diversification by establishing direct flights from new locations, including New York and Frankfurt, with South American connections on the horizon. These actions have spread tourism benefits throughout Baja California Sur, where tourism is a primary economic driver.
After rapid post-pandemic growth, Los Cabos has managed to stabilize visitor numbers over the past three years while increasing the average visitor spending. The destination proudly holds a remarkable 95% visitor satisfaction rate and 40% repeat visitation.
The tourism board has also invested heavily in digital innovation, creating an interactive website with virtual reality experiences and AI-powered tools that have earned international acclaim within the tourism industry.
This balanced approach to tourism development has positioned Los Cabos as a model for sustainable destination management in Mexico’s competitive tourism landscape.
