Grupo Bimbo, Mexico’s largest breadmaker, has announced plans to invest $2 billion across seven Mexican states over the next three years. This investment is expected to create approximately 2,000 direct jobs and potentially 10,800 indirect positions.
The investment will focus on infrastructure improvements in the following regions:
- Baja California
- Yucatán
- Nuevo León
- Querétaro
- Puebla
- México state
- Mexico City
According to José Manuel González, president and director general of Bimbo México, the funding will enhance the company’s productive and technological capacity while strengthening its research and development divisions.
Project Initiatives
The project includes:
- The modernization of at least 30 factories
- Improvements to Bimbo’s sustainability initiatives through an expanded fleet of electric delivery vehicles
- Development of more environmentally friendly packaging
President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed the announcement, emphasizing that it demonstrates investor confidence in Mexico. This could potentially attract additional domestic and foreign investments. The initiative aligns with Sheinbaum’s Plan México, which aims to coordinate private investment with social development, while reducing imports and increasing domestic production.
Grupo Bimbo, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, currently sources 97% of its ingredients from Mexican producers and has created 80,000 direct jobs in Mexico throughout its history. The company has expressed its continued support for government initiatives, including the anti-inflation package and the Water Security and Sustainability Agreement.
While upcoming U.S. tariffs could have an impact, González expressed confidence that any effects would be minimal. Bimbo’s primary export markets are the United States and Canada, accounting for nearly half of the company’s sales.
The investment announcement coincided with the passing of Bimbo co-founder Roberto Servitje, who died at age 97.
