Oaxaca is gearing up for a vibrant July filled with cultural celebrations, culinary events, and artistic performances centered around the famous Guelaguetza festival.

The month-long festivities build toward the main Guelaguetza celebrations, which culminate in the two “lunes del Cerro” (Mondays on the Hill) starting July 21. While stadium tickets are difficult to secure, visitors can experience the festival through numerous street parades, markets, and community events throughout the city and surrounding towns.

Key Events in July

Key events include the Danza de la Pluma performances, which reenact the Spanish conquest through elaborate costumes and choreography. These dances feature performers wearing large semicircular headdresses made from thousands of colorful feathers and will take place every Monday until July 21 across various Oaxacan communities.

Food enthusiasts can attend the Tlayuda Fair from July 11-13 at Parque Primavera Oaxaqueña, where organizers will attempt to create “The World’s Largest Tlayuda.” The Mezcal Fair, running July 18-29 at the Centro Cultural y de Convenciones de Oaxaca, will showcase over 300 Oaxacan mezcals along with local beer, coffee, food, and artisan crafts.

  • Legend of Donaji performances on July 20 and 27
  • Cocktail collaboration night featuring traditional Caldo de Piedra soup on July 19
  • Festival of Tejate and Tamales, offering traditional and creative variations of these Oaxacan specialties

Art and Music Events

For music lovers, a Ghibli concert paying tribute to composer Joe Hisaishi will take place on July 5 at Casa Ceiba with two scheduled performances.

Throughout the month, visitors can also participate in workshops like those offered at Casa Subterránea Art School, where they can learn about Oaxacan graphic traditions and create large-format paper stencils.

These events collectively highlight Oaxaca’s rich cultural heritage, culinary traditions, and artistic expressions during one of the region’s most celebrated times of the year.
