Expansion of Eagle Pass Bridge to Boost Mexico-US Trade

U.S. President Donald Trump has approved a major expansion of the Camino Real International Bridge (Bridge II), which connects Eagle Pass, Texas, with Piedras Negras, Coahuila. This project will double the number of lanes from six to twelve, significantly enhancing the cross-border infrastructure between Mexico and the United States.

The expansion is a response to the increasing trade volume at this key crossing point, which saw a growth of over 9% in 2023, with two-way trade totaling more than $37 billion. This significant increase positions Eagle Pass as the fourth-largest commercial crossing in Texas.

The project is expected to take three years to complete and aims to alleviate congestion for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Coahuila will manage a 30-year concession to operate the expanded bridge once construction is finished.

The approval follows a streamlined permit process recently authorized by Congress for bridges in Webb, Cameron, and Maverick counties in South Texas. This expedited process has already facilitated approval for:

  • New international bridges in Laredo and Brownsville
  • Expansions at other key border crossings

Before construction begins, the project must still receive approval from the United States Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission. Officials on both sides of the border have welcomed the news, viewing it as a significant boost for regional economic development and cross-border commerce.
