Cozumel’s plan for a fourth cruise ship dock has been halted indefinitely, primarily due to concerns about the environment. The company Muelles del Caribe, which is leading the initiative, announced this pause after discussions with Mexico’s federal Environment Ministry, known as Semarnat, and other officials. Despite approval back in December 2021, the project faced strong opposition from environmental groups and local tourism businesses. They expressed worries about potential damage to the Villa Blanca coral reef, which is very close to the island’s national marine park.
There were also concerns that the dock might interfere with Coast Guard duties and emergency responses. Even after the government promised a new environmental impact study, Cozumel’s Municipality seems determined to block further construction permits. This situation represents a larger conflict between development and environmental well-being in one of Mexico’s prime tourist spots.
Cozumel, welcoming approximately 8.8 million visitors in 2023, is at the forefront of ongoing discussions about sustainable tourism on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. This hold on the project underscores the continuous dialogue around eco-conscious travel.
