Embracing Tranquility: An Expat’s Journey to Small-Town Life in Mexico

A Canadian expat has chosen to leave the bustling beach town of Zihuatanejo for the tranquility of El Coacoyul, a small Mexican community located just 15 minutes south of the popular tourist destination.

After 31 years in Mexico and many years renting in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, the expatriate decided three years ago to build a home on land purchased previously in El Coacoyul, a town of approximately 6,900 residents. El Coacoyul, whose Indigenous name translates to “navel of the world,” has seen rapid growth due to its proximity to the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport and surrounding tourist areas. Despite this development, the town maintains its small-town atmosphere, with artistic murals hidden within its streets and walkways.

Challenges and Connections

The transition required adjustment, particularly due to the inability to walk to familiar places and the initial social isolation. However, being one of few foreigners in the community has fostered meaningful connections with locals, reminiscent of the expat’s small-town upbringing in Canada.

The town offers all necessary amenities within walking distance, such as:

  • Fresh produce stands
  • Poultry shop
  • Bakeries
  • Various eateries

Local establishments like Pollería Luz and Carnitas Quirego offer more than just goods and services. They provide personal connections, with shopkeepers who recognize regular customers and inquire about their wellbeing.

Community and Culture

El Coacoyul is also home to the Museo del Coco (Coconut Museum), preserving the area’s history of commercial coconut farming while hosting events and exhibitions. The museum includes a restaurant, gift shop, and a nonprofit Seahorse Sanctuary & Equine Therapy Centre founded by the writer.

While integrating into a new community presents challenges, the expat has embraced the slower pace of life in El Coacoyul, finding greater peace and calm than ever before, while still retaining the option to visit Zihuatanejo when craving more social interaction.
