Authorities at Cancun International Airport have been actively targeting unauthorized tourist transportation services, successfully towing nearly 30 vehicles since June 3. This effort is part of an ongoing operation to combat illegal operators.
This joint initiative, led by the National Guard and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT), aims to eliminate unlicensed transportation providers. These operators have frequently been linked to excessive fare charging, a persistent issue for tourists arriving in Cancun.
According to SICT officials, the inspection teams focus on vehicles parked at the airport and those dropping off passengers. The operation takes place daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., coinciding with the peak tourist arrival times.
The crackdown is in response to numerous complaints from travelers about exorbitant transportation fees. Notable incidents include a Canadian tourist being charged $1,000 USD just to travel between airport terminals, and a Mexico City resident being billed 2,000 pesos (approximately $100 USD) for a ride from the airport to the Cancun Hotel Zone.
Authorities have responded to these issues by establishing an official transportation option through ADO buses. These buses now offer service from the airport to the central hotel zone for just 140 pesos (about $7 USD).
The enforcement operation is expected to continue as part of broader efforts to formalize transportation services and protect visitors from price gouging in one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations.
