Close Call at Mexico City Airport: Delta and Aeroméxico Planes in Near Collision

Two commercial airplanes narrowly avoided disaster on Monday at Mexico City International Airport. An Aeroméxico Connect Embraer E190, coming in from Aguascalientes, touched down on the same runway where a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 was trying to lift off. This prompted the Delta aircraft, heading for Atlanta, to abort its takeoff to prevent a potential high-speed mishap.

Reports show both aircraft occupied a crucial part of the runway at the same time, sparking major safety concerns. Initial findings hint that the close call might have stemmed from an overworked control tower and undertrained personnel—issues that have cropped up in previous occurrences at this busy airport.

Recently, the U.S. imposed new flight restrictions on Mexican carriers following logistical changes for cargo flights here. Such ongoing situations highlight the persistent challenges of managing one of the country’s most congested airspaces.
