Baja California has experienced a remarkable surge in tourism, recording over 12 million visitors in the first quarter of 2025. This marks an 8% increase compared to the same period last year. If the current trend persists, the state is projected to exceed its previous visitor numbers of 28 million in 2024 and 30 million in 2023.

The tourism industry significantly impacts the local economy, contributing approximately one billion dollars (19.8 billion pesos) to Baja California’s economy in 2024. Among these visitors, while many are classified as “border tourists” who do not stay overnight, the state also welcomed a million cruise ship passengers last year.

Tianguis Turístico Mexico and Its Economic Impact

A major highlight in Baja California’s tourism success was hosting the 49th Tianguis Turístico Mexico (TTM) from April 28 to May 1, 2025. As the first-ever binational edition, this tourism fair set a Guinness World Record with over 7,000 attendees in a single day. The event attracted 8,781 participants from 46 countries and resulted in agreements for 35 new flights to Mexico, including 28 international routes. During the event, hotel occupancy soared to 98% in Tijuana and 95% in Rosarito.

Upcoming Events and Attractions

  • Opera en la Calle: Tijuana will host the 25th anniversary of this annual festival on July 12, bringing opera performances to the streets. Last year, the event attracted 12,000 attendees and this year will feature approximately 300 artists and 50 vendors.
  • Wine Region: 2025 is shaping up to be an excellent vintage year for Baja California’s wine region, which produces about 70% of Mexico’s wines. The area’s Mediterranean-style climate, with hot days and cool nights, creates ideal growing conditions for the region’s 80-plus wineries. Popular wine grape varieties include cabernet sauvignon and chenin blanc.
