Mexicana de Aviación marked a significant milestone as it welcomed the first of 20 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft at Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in Mexico City. This event signals the beginning of a major fleet expansion for the state-owned airline.

The aircraft delivery is part of a 20 billion-peso (approximately US $1 billion) purchase agreement between the Mexican government and Brazilian manufacturer Embraer. The expansion plan will occur over the next two years, with a schedule of five aircraft arriving in 2025, seven in 2026, and the remaining eight in 2027.

Aircraft Features and Capabilities

The E195-E2 aircraft accommodates 132 passengers and can reach speeds of up to 963 kilometers per hour. It boasts an aerodynamic design utilizing lightweight composite materials and the latest-generation engines, which reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%. With a range of 4,615 kilometers, the aircraft can effectively connect AIFA to destinations across North, Central, and South America.

Training and Expansion Plans

Since resuming operations in late 2023, Mexicana de Aviación is proactively preparing for this expansion by training 56 pilots and 84 flight attendants. The airline’s CEO, Leobardo Ávila Bojórquez, highlighted the importance of a state-owned airline for urgent mobilization, natural disaster response, and national logistical operations.

The first E195-E2 is anticipated to commence commercial service by August 25, followed by the addition of a second aircraft to operations on September 12. Currently, the airline operates six main routes but has announced plans to expand to 11 international destinations in the United States, Canada, and Latin America. This plan includes establishing additional operational bases in Tijuana and Tulum over the upcoming three years.
