The landscape of tourism in Nayarit is changing as Tepic’s revamped international airport gains prominence, offering travelers an alternative to the traditionally busy Puerto Vallarta entry point.
Tepic-Riviera Nayarit International Airport (TPQ) has undergone significant upgrades, including a lengthened runway capable of accommodating long-haul aircraft, modernized terminal facilities, and improved customs and immigration services. The renovations are part of a strategic investment to enhance connectivity to Mexico’s Pacific region.
Volaris recently launched a new nonstop flight between Los Angeles and Tepic, currently operating three times weekly. The flight takes just under three hours and positions travelers closer to northern coastal destinations while bypassing congestion around Puerto Vallarta.
The improved highway system now connects Tepic to the coast in less than an hour, making popular destinations like:
- San Blas
- Punta Mita
- Sayulita
more accessible. For travelers heading to these coastal areas, the Tepic route presents a compelling alternative to traditional entry points.
Beyond serving as a transit hub, Tepic itself offers attractions worth exploring. The city features a historic center anchored by the Catedral de la Asuncion and Plaza Principal, with numerous cafes and restaurants. Nearby, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking trails at Cerro de San Juan, while coffee lovers can visit small-scale producers in Xalisco, just 15 minutes away.
The airport also provides convenient access to inland destinations such as:
- Compostela – a colonial town with cobblestone streets
- Jala – one of Mexico’s smallest Pueblos Mágicos, located near the hikeable Ceboruco volcano
- Santa María del Oro lagoon – a crater lake ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding
As infrastructure improvements continue, Tepic is positioning itself not just as an alternative entry point but as a gateway to a different Nayarit experience that includes mountains, mangroves, and cultural attractions beyond the familiar beachfront destinations.
