Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly rejected recent comments by U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi, who referred to Mexico as an “adversary” that is “drugging our children.”
During her Thursday morning press conference, Sheinbaum stated that Bondi is “not very well informed” and emphasized the significant cooperation that exists between Mexico and the United States. The Mexican president noted that the two countries are close to finalizing a new security accord.
The exchange comes after Bondi included Mexico alongside Iran, Russia, and China in a list of “foreign adversaries” during a U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on Wednesday. Bondi claimed these nations pose threats to the United States, not just through physical attacks but also through issues like drug trafficking and overdoses.
On the same day as Bondi’s comments, the U.S. Treasury Department accused three Mexican banking institutions of participating in money laundering for organized crime groups involved in fentanyl trafficking between the two countries.
This diplomatic tension follows another recent incident where Sheinbaum rejected unfounded allegations from U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who claimed the Mexican president was encouraging violent protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles.
Despite these verbal confrontations, bilateral military cooperation continues. The Mexican and U.S. Defense ministries issued a joint communique Thursday following reciprocal visits by military officials from both nations. The meetings resulted in the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA), which the U.S. Northern Command described as “another advance in our bilateral military cooperation with Mexico.”
