President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed two major incidents during her Wednesday morning press conference: the violent arrest of an undocumented Mexican man in the United States and a deadly shooting in Guanajuato that claimed multiple lives.

Condemnation of U.S. Immigration Tactics

Sheinbaum condemned the force used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents against Narciso Barranco, a 48-year-old gardener from Cuernavaca who has lived in the United States for 31 years. The president called the incident “unfair” and “an injustice,” noting that Barranco is the father of three sons who have served in the U.S. military.

Sheinbaum emphasized, “The Mexicans who live in the United States are people who went there out of necessity and they’ve made their lives there. They are Mexicans and Americans at the same time,” adding that the Mexican Consulate had immediately contacted Barranco following his detention.

Support for Immigrants Highlighted by Diego Luna

During the press conference, Sheinbaum also acknowledged Mexican actor Diego Luna’s recent monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” where he defended immigrants in the United States. Luna, who became the first Mexican to host an English-language late-night talk show, emphasized that immigrants “are the ones who built this country.”

Addressing the Guanajuato Massacre

Regarding Tuesday night’s massacre in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Sheinbaum described it as “terrible” and confirmed it was under investigation. According to the Guanajuato Attorney General’s Office, 11 people were killed and 20 others wounded when gunmen opened fire during celebrations for the feast day of Saint John the Baptist. The victims included eight men, two women, and a 17-year-old minor.

Guanajuato continues to be Mexico’s most violent state in terms of total homicides, though officials report that murder rates have been declining.
