Acclaimed Hollywood director Tim Burton has been exploring Mexico City’s cultural landmarks ahead of the July 3 opening of his immersive exhibition “The Labyrinth.”

During his visit, Burton traveled through the Xochimilco canals on a traditional trajinera boat accompanied by Mexican celebrities including actor Juan Manuel Bernal and actress Bárbara Mori. The director also visited the Dolores Cemetery in Chapultepec Park, where many prominent Mexicans are buried.

While at the cemetery, Burton reflected on how Mexican culture has influenced his artistic vision since childhood. “I like visiting Mexico because it feels so close to my skin,” he noted during his visit, explaining that growing up in Los Angeles exposed him to Day of the Dead traditions and Mexican art that have inspired his distinctive style.

The director’s Mexico tour also included:

  • Trips to the traditional town of Tepoztlán in Morelos, known for its pre-Columbian heritage and colonial architecture
  • Attendance at a lucha libre wrestling match at Arena Mexico

“The Labyrinth” exhibition will feature more than 200 of Burton’s original works displayed across 28 themed rooms. The interactive installation offers visitors a unique experience, as each person can choose their own path through the exhibit, creating different experiences for each attendee. The exhibition will be housed at the Lienzo Charro adjacent to the Dolores Cemetery, with tickets priced between 450 and 800 pesos (US $24-$42).

Burton is known worldwide for directing films including:

  1. “Beetlejuice”
  2. “Edward Scissorhands”
  3. “Big Fish”
  4. “Sweeney Todd”
