A third Costco warehouse store is set to open in Guadalajara this summer, highlighting the retail giant’s expanding presence and remarkable popularity in Mexico.
The new location on Guadalajara’s north side comes in response to overwhelming demand at existing stores in the city. According to local reports, the manager of Guadalajara’s west side Costco claims his location is the busiest in Mexico, consistently drawing massive crowds that create parking challenges and lengthy checkout lines.
Despite representing only 4% of Costco’s 133 million worldwide members, with an estimated 2% of Mexican households holding memberships, the brand has developed a passionate following in the country. The 600-peso annual membership fee, though relatively expensive compared to average Mexican household incomes, has not deterred shoppers seeking the American retailer’s offerings.
The warehouse chain’s popularity has even spawned secondary businesses throughout Mexico. In areas without Costco access, entrepreneurs resell Costco products at premium prices. One notable case involved an influencer who purchased 970 rosca de reyes cakes from Guadalajara Costcos and resold them in Colima for a profit of 164,900 pesos (approximately US $8,600).
Reasons for Costco’s Appeal
Retail analysts suggest Costco’s appeal in Mexico stems from its exclusive membership model and wide selection of imported goods not readily available elsewhere, particularly appealing to Mexico’s urban middle and upper classes.
The opening date for the new north Guadalajara location has not yet been officially announced, but anticipation is already building among local residents.
