Hurricane Erick has left a tragic toll in its wake, with the loss of a one-year-old child and extensive damage in southern Mexico after hitting Oaxaca as a Category 3 storm. The child tragically drowned after being swept away by floodwaters in San Marcos, Guerrero, as reported during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s press conference.
The storm’s destruction was significant, as it brought down trees and utility poles in Guerrero and Oaxaca, and tore sheet metal roofs from homes. Flooding has affected streets and residences throughout the region, with 39 municipalities in Oaxaca reporting damage.
Particularly affected areas include:
- Villa de Tututepec and Pinotepa Nacional became unreachable by road due to high waters.
- In Juchitán, near Salina Cruz, the overflowing Los Perros River impacted approximately 2,000 homes.
In response, the Mexican government has deployed more than 33,000 troops to support the affected states, with significant numbers stationed in Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Chiapas. Military efforts focus on clearing roads, providing medical help at shelters, and distributing food and water.
The Welfare Ministry plans to conduct a damage assessment once the emergency period ends to determine the eligibility for government support. Right now, food and grocery assistance are already being provided to those in need.
Agricultural sectors have also suffered, with damage reported to papaya and lime crops in Oaxaca. Additionally, fishing equipment and boats critical to coastal communities such as Puerto Escondido, Puerto Ángel, and Pinotepa Nacional have been compromised.
