Marilyn Manson’s Controversial Concert in San Luis Potosí Sparks Debate Over Artistic Freedom

A free Marilyn Manson concert will take place as scheduled at the 2025 Potosina National Fair (Fenapo) in San Luis Potosí on August 10, despite formal objections from Catholic Church officials.

San Luis Potosí’s Archbishop Jorge Alberto Cavazos Arizpe had requested the show’s cancellation, arguing that Manson “promotes evil” and mocks religious beliefs. The archbishop compared Manson’s performances to narcocorridos, a controversial music genre recently banned in several Mexican states for allegedly glorifying cartel culture.

Governor Ricardo Gallardo firmly rejected the cancellation request, defending the decision on grounds of artistic freedom. “San Luis Potosí is a secular state, where freedoms and beliefs are respected,” Gallardo stated, comparing the cancellation attempt to the Holy Inquisition.

The concert is part of the Fenapo festival running from August 8-31, which features a diverse lineup including:

  • DJ Tiësto
  • Belinda
  • Los Tigres del Norte

All performances at the Teatro del Pueblo will be free to the public.

This will mark Manson’s first appearance in San Luis Potosí, though the 56-year-old American heavy metal star has performed elsewhere in Mexico multiple times, including shows in 2012, 2018, and at Monterrey’s Machaca Fest last November.

This year’s Fenapo festival theme is “The Magic of Our Magical Towns,” featuring Zacatecas as a guest state along with six San Luis Potosí towns that have received the Pueblo Mágico designation.
