A revolutionary $10 billion freight transportation system is set to transform cross-border trade between Mexico and the United States. Texas-based startup Green Corridors has received a presidential permit to build a 265-kilometer elevated guideway connecting Monterrey, Nuevo León, to Laredo, Texas.
The proposed Green Corridors Intelligent Freight Transport System (GC-IFTS) will feature autonomous diesel-electric hybrid shuttles that transport standard 53-foot trailers along a dedicated elevated path. The system is designed to handle up to 10,000 trailers daily in each direction.
Construction is expected to be completed by 2031, with operations likely beginning after a testing phase. The project includes four freight terminals—two in Laredo and two in Monterrey—each covering approximately 40.4 hectares.
The Laredo border crossing currently handles approximately $320 billion worth of goods annually, with 3.3 million tractor-trailer crossings per year. These commercial vehicles frequently face significant delays that impact supply chains.
According to Green Corridors, the new system will operate 24/7 and reduce emissions by 75% compared to traditional diesel trucking. The company claims its freight transportation costs will be substantially lower than current options while enhancing border security through real-time monitoring and 100% freight screening.
The project is privately funded with backing from investors including:
- The Swinbank family office in Houston
- Druker Capital in New York
- Chang Robotics Fund in Jacksonville
With Mexico-US trade reaching nearly $840 billion last year and truck crossings into Laredo increasing by 28% since 2019, the new corridor could significantly enhance North America’s integrated manufacturing capabilities. This infrastructure improvement aligns with Mexico’s efforts to capitalize on nearshoring opportunities through its Plan México economic initiative.
