Mexico Considers Vehicle Licensing for Returning Deportees

Mexico’s government is contemplating measures to assist deportees from the United States who wish to bring their vehicles back to Mexico permanently. This consideration was shared by Interior Minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez during a recent press conference.

The plan involves creating a special licensing system that would enable Mexicans returning from the U.S. to legally import and “regularize” vehicles that were purchased while they lived abroad. Rodríguez praised this initiative as “a very good idea” and mentioned that she would direct Mexican consulates in the United States to explore how it could be implemented.

The proposal is timely as numerous Mexicans in the U.S. contemplate returning to Mexico due to concerns about potential immigration raids. Beyond vehicle importation, the government might also offer support to migrants bringing furniture and other household items back to Mexico.

This initiative aligns with the Trump administration’s self-deportation program, which purportedly provides undocumented immigrants in the United States with travel assistance and a $1,000 bonus if they return to their home countries using the Department of Homeland Security’s Home Mobile App.

During the press conference, led by Rodríguez while President Claudia Sheinbaum attended the G7 Summit in Canada, other topics were discussed, including a successful junk food ban in Mexican schools and updates on a postponed meeting between Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump.
