President Claudia Sheinbaum met with prominent Canadian business leaders on the sidelines of the Group of 7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, to promote investment opportunities in Mexico and highlight her administration’s economic goals.

Though Mexico is not a G7 member, Sheinbaum accepted an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend the summit located about 90 miles outside of Calgary, Alberta. The invitation was extended at the urging of the Business Council of Canada (BCC), an organization representing 170 business leaders whose companies employ 2.1 million Canadians.

During the meeting, Sheinbaum presented Plan México, her administration’s blueprint aimed at elevating Mexico to join Canada and the United States among the world’s top 10 economies. She was accompanied by key cabinet members including Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, Finance Minister Edgar Amador Zamora, and Foreign Affairs Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente.

Many of the Canadian executives at the meeting represented companies already operating in Mexico, including:

  • TC Energy
  • WestJet Airlines
  • Palliser Furniture
  • ATCO
  • BRP
  • Element Fleet Management

The BCC has expressed strong interest in expanding its business presence in Mexico.

Prior to the meeting, the BCC had released a statement encouraging strengthened bilateral ties between Mexico and Canada, while also calling for both nations, along with the United States, to commit to an “expedited review and extension” of their trilateral trade agreement.

In addition to the business roundtable, Sheinbaum’s G7 agenda includes bilateral talks with Prime Minister Carney and meetings with leaders from Germany, India, and the European Union.
