President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that her scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump has been postponed, not canceled, after Trump’s early departure from the G7 Summit in Canada. The U.S. president cut short his visit to return to Washington D.C. to address the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
“The situation in the Middle East is very tense,” Sheinbaum told reporters outside her hotel in Calgary, Alberta. Interior Minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez later clarified that in-person talks between the two leaders would take place “at another time.”
The postponement means Sheinbaum will not have the immediate opportunity to personally discuss key issues with Trump, including Mexico’s concerns about U.S. tariffs on Mexican steel, aluminum, and cars. Trade, security, and migration were planned as the main topics for their bilateral meeting.
Rodríguez emphasized that “good communication” already exists between the Mexican and U.S. governments, with “possibilities of daily dialogue” remaining open. She also noted that Sheinbaum was not the only leader affected by Trump’s early departure, as the prime ministers of Japan and Australia and the president of Ukraine also missed their opportunities for bilateral meetings.
Sheinbaum will continue her G7 agenda with scheduled meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting with Carney is expected to focus on strengthening economic relations and potentially discussing the USMCA free trade agreement, which is scheduled for review in 2026.
