President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed Mexico’s opposition to immigration raids targeting “honest workers” in the United States during a meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in Mexico City on Wednesday.
During the meeting at the National Palace, Sheinbaum emphasized that arresting immigrant workers harms both the individuals and the US economy. “We don’t agree with this scheme of criminalizing working people,” she stated at her Thursday morning press conference.
The President requested that Landau relay Mexico’s position to both the State Department and President Donald Trump, whom she expects to meet at the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada.
The discussion follows recent immigration raids in Los Angeles that detained 61 Mexican nationals, triggering large protests. Security Minister Omar García Harfuch and Foreign Affairs Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente were also present at the meeting.
Additional Points of Tension
- US suspension of Mexican livestock imports due to screwworm detection
- Proposed taxes on remittances
- Trump’s recent increase of steel tariffs to 50%
Sheinbaum clarified that unlike previous diplomatic encounters, Landau’s visit was described as a “courtesy meeting” with no specific requests from the US side.
She characterized the interaction as respectful but firm in defending Mexican interests.
Upcoming Discussions
The President confirmed her attendance at next week’s G7 Summit in Alberta, where a bilateral meeting with Trump is “very probable” to discuss security, migration, and trade issues.
