Mazatlán has officially entered the Guinness World Records by creating the world’s longest sashimi display, measuring a full kilometer along the city’s famous malecón (coastal promenade).

The record-breaking culinary achievement took place on Sunday, June 1, with more than 19,000 pieces of sashimi prepared using over two tonnes of fresh tuna. This impressive display easily surpassed the previous record of 5,343 pieces.

The massive undertaking required the coordination of 300 chefs who worked together to cut, assemble, and serve the raw fish delicacy. In accordance with Guinness World Record requirements, all the sashimi had to be consumed on site to qualify for the honor.

The event drew hundreds of tourists and locals to the Pacific Coast resort city, creating a festive atmosphere that included performances by ten musical bands along Avenida del Mar.

Tourism officials view the event as more than just a culinary achievement. The record attempt was organized by local business groups including:

  • Canaco Mazatlán
  • National Gastronomic Council of Mazatlán
  • Club Vatel

These organizations aimed to highlight Mazatlán as an international culinary destination.

The event is part of broader efforts to revitalize tourism in Sinaloa state, which has struggled with security issues since September 2024. Earlier this year, Mazatlán launched the “A Sea of Stories” campaign to promote the city as a destination for:

  1. Sporting events
  2. Business meetings
  3. Weddings
  4. Fishing tournaments

For travelers interested in visiting Mazatlán, this event showcases the city’s strong culinary scene and its status as home to the largest tuna fleet in Latin America.
